Archerfield (winter) course review (8/10)

Updated: Jun 12, 2018

Location – 4/5 - 35 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh and 45 minutes from the Airport on the East Lothian coast this is an ideal winter destination. Either stay in Edinburgh for the xmas experience and make the day trip or stay on the Archerfield estate and travel into Edinburgh for the day after golfing.

Welcome Received – 4/5 Club is well set-up for receiving visitors and you will be welcomed fairly informal, your clubs taken and looked after. Large locker room, changing and shower area to warm up after your round. They will even clean your shoes (although noticeably for November mine were free of grass and mud)

Practice Facilities - 5/5 World class facilities Some of the best you will find (the best in Scotland in my view)– great driving range and chipping areas with a fantastic performance centre if you need some winter tuition.

Club House – 4/5 Large warm clubhouse, with excellent club or restaurant food. My only complaint would be the prevalence of families with small children in the golfers area, some separation may be worth considering

Course – 4/5 Last week in November and the course was in excellent (and dry) condition, there were no mats in use and no winter greens as we are on links ground so despite a really wet 4 days previously the course was pretty dry. Some irregular roll on the greens as some were soft, but for winter they were better than expected. The high pine trees on some holes on the Fidra mean that some greens inevitably get restricted sunlight so full credit to the greenkeepers.

Stuffiness – 1/5 Archerfield is a modern golf club so very little is too formal.

YES Great location for a short winter golf trip, and afterwards (whilst I haven’t used it) there is a great SPA facility on site to warm up in and the bar in the Archerfield walled garden has some excellent local craft beer and whisky’s to look forward to.

Thoughts – Winter golf is all about getting out and enjoying the hours of sunshine as best we can and once you get the base layers and other warm clothing on a few hours on the Fidra is definitely a bonus. Just remember to take the golf-mits !
